The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially introduced Minister for Energy, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, aka NAPO, as running mate to the flagbearer, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for the upcoming December 2024 Presidential elections.
At a ceremony held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the Kumasi Jubilee Park, Vice President Bawumia praised Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s exceptional work ethic, results-oriented approach, and impactful tenure as both Minister of Education and Minister of Energy.
“I nominated NAPO because he is results-oriented,” Bawumia stated, emphasizing that these qualities were pivotal in his decision.
The selection of NAPO was widely regarded as a ‘no-brainer,’ given his proven track record and strong support base.
Representing Manhyia South in Parliament, where the NPP consistently garners over 80% of the vote, Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s grassroots appeal and ability to resonate with party members and the public were decisive factors in his selection.
This choice reflects a strong commitment to the party’s values and national aspirations.
His royal lineage at the Apagyafie of the Manhyia Palace and familial ties to former President John Agyekum Kufuor add historical and cultural depth to his candidacy.
Before the public introduction at Jubilee Park, NAPO received a formal blessing from Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace, underscoring his deep connection to the Asante Kingdom.
Following the announcement, party members and supporters praised Vice President Bawumia’s choice and expressed optimism about the potential of the Bawumia-NAPO ticket.
They stressed that the combination of Bawumia’s economic expertise and NAPO’s youthfulness, administrative prowess, and political experience will enable them to present a compelling vision for Ghana and secure an unprecedented third term for the NPP under the Fourth Republic.
