The committee tasked with investigating the alleged plot to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has suspended its sitting indefinitely.
The committee’s chair, Samuel Atta Akyea, unequivocally informed journalists after Wednesday’s sitting that they would be scrutinizing a new set of evidence presented to them by retired COP George Alex Mensah’s legal team.
“There was written evidence that we will look at, and it came from COP retired George Alex Mensah. He has additional evidence, so he released it to the committee.”
“The matters are coming to a head, and we afforded the witnesses the opportunity to say whether they have any additional matters they want to look at. We want to retire and look at what we have garnered so far, and then we could start writing our report,” Samuel Atta Akyea said.
Earlier this week, the legal representatives of the IGP accused the committee of mistreating the IGP and exceeding its authority.
However, Samuel Atta Akyea, a committee member, strongly refuted the allegations, stating that he had not been biased against the IGP and that the committee had not overstepped its bounds.
The leaked tape, which has gone viral, has been the subject of intense discussion and debate.
Bugri Naabu, who testified before the committee, confirmed that the tape was authentic.
The tape contains a conversation between Bugri Naabu and three senior police officers – retired COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi – in which they allegedly plotted to remove the IGP to help the NPP rig the 2024 elections.
