Information Ministry condemns attack on UTV, emphasizes protection of Media Freedom

The Ministry of Information has issued a condemnation of the unauthorized entry into media organizations.

This follows an attack on the studios of United Television (UTV) during the live broadcast of ‘United Showbiz,’ an entertainment program.

Affiliates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) allegedly carried out the attack, claiming the program displayed overt partisanship against the ruling government.

Upon receiving information about the incident, the Ministry promptly reported it to the Ghana Police Service, leading to the arrest of 16 individuals at the UTV premises.

The Ministry stressed the importance of safeguarding the right to free expression and media freedom, fundamental pillars of the nation’s democracy.

In an official statement, the Ministry stated, “The right to free expression and the freedom of the media are key pillars of our democracy and must be fiercely protected. The Ministry stands with the police and the courts in the conduct of their duties.”

The Ministry encouraged the media, particularly broadcast media show hosts and panelists, to exercise their fundamental freedoms responsibly while promoting national cohesion.

The statement reiterated the significance of balancing freedom of expression with the responsibility to foster unity and harmony within the nation.
