In the name of Allah, the compassionate the merciful
“O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, sacrificing on stone alters to other than Allah, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan” Quran 5:90. Allah has also commanded the believers as He has commanded His Messengers by saying: “O Messengers! Eat the good things, and do good deeds.”Quran 23:51. Moreover, Allah has said `O you who believe in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you…” Quran 2:172. These three main verses of the Quran and many others are the bases for the prohibition of trading in unwholesome and illicit goods.
Trading in all commodities is permissible except alcohol, gambling, pork, tobacco, pornography, derivatives, etc. Let’s look at the wisdom behind the prohibition of these items:
Gambling
Gambling can lead to financial difficulties, as individuals may spend more money than they can afford to lose. This can result in debt, bankruptcy, and other financial issues. Gambling can also be addictive, leading individuals to prioritize gambling over other responsibilities and activities. This can result in strained relationships, loss of employment, and overall negative impacts on mental health.
In addition, gambling can lead to an increase in crime rates, as individuals may turn to illegal activities to fund their gambling habits or to try to recoup their losses. The addiction can put a strain on relationships and family dynamics, leading to stress, conflict, and potential breakdowns within the family unit. Gambling addiction can also lead to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
The gambling industry can have negative economic effects, such as encouraging individuals to spend their money on gambling rather than in other sectors of the economy. Additionally, gambling can contribute to inequality as those with lower incomes are more likely to be negatively impacted by gambling addiction.
Further, gambling addiction can lead to increased healthcare costs, as individuals may require treatment for mental health issues and other related conditions.
Tobacco and alcohol
Tobacco and alcohol are two commonly used substances that have significant effects on human health and well-being. The comprehensive effects of tobacco and alcohol on human life include physical, mental, and social impacts.
Furthermore, Tobacco use is linked to numerous serious health conditions, including lung cancer, heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It also increases the risk of developing other types of cancer, such as mouth, throat, and bladder cancer.
Alcohol abuse can lead to liver damage, including cirrhosis and fatty liver disease. It can also cause cardiovascular problems, such as high blood pressure and an increased risk of stroke. Excessive alcohol consumption can also weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections.
In addition, both tobacco and alcohol use can have negative effects on reproductive health, including infertility, erectile dysfunction, and complications during pregnancy.
Tobacco use has been linked to an increased risk of mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Nicotine, the main psychoactive ingredient in tobacco, can also have addictive properties that can lead to dependence and withdrawal symptoms.
Alcohol abuse can have a significant impact on mental health, contributing to mood disorders, cognitive impairment, and an increased risk of developing mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. Chronic alcohol use can also lead to memory problems and difficulty concentrating.
Tobacco use can have negative social consequences, as smoking is often restricted in public spaces and can lead to isolation from non-smoking friends and family members. Smoking can also lead to social stigma and discrimination. Alcohol abuse can strain relationships with friends, family, and partners, leading to conflict and isolation. It can also contribute to risky behaviours, such as driving under the influence or engaging in violent behaviour, which can harm others and damage social connections.
In a nutshell, the negative effects of gambling, alcohol, and tobacco on human life, the economy, physical health, mental well-being, and social relationships can be significant and far-reaching. Individuals and governments need to be aware of these potential consequences and take steps to mitigate them.
