An Islamic scholar is on the run for his life after he got wind of plans by his family to hire thugs to kill him for reverting to Christianity.
Rashad Abdul Rahaman, a resident of Newtown, Accra, is said to have fled home few years ago, after a failed murder attempt on him by some unknown persons.
A source familiar with the story disclosed this to journalists in Accra during a peace walk on religious tolerance in Newtown.
The source wanted to remain anonymous as he risked being targeted for going to press.
According to the source, his cousin, Rahaman confided in him that he reverted to Christianity in 2020 and fellows with Gate of Zion Ministry International.
He said Rahaman told him that he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and saviour, but the family were unhappy about the decision.
The source said the family tried to convince Rahaman to rethink his decision but Rahaman insisted that “he was lost and Christ found him.”
According to the source, the decision to revert was a sweet-bitter pill for Rahaman as he had to deal with fear, family interest and his choice of new religion.
According to the source, Rahman a teacher of the Qur’an, is a very popular figure in the area, and the family feared he could influence his students and other members of the family to revert to Christianity.
This fear, the source said, was the reason the family tried to get rid of Rahaman by foul means.
The anonymous source told the journalists that he personally intervened when Rahaman was almost strangled by his brothers during a family meeting concerning the same issue.
The source told journalists that ever since Rahaman reverted, the family house became a centre of daily fisticuffs and that Rahaman was always at the receiving end.
He said matters got worse when Rahaman’s uncle Abdul Karim moved to the family, adding that Abdul Karim and some thugs once attempted to set Rahaman ablaze while he was asleep.
