The wife of the late John Kumah, Mrs Lilian Kumah, has refuted the unfounded rumours regarding the cause of death of her husband.
According to Apostle Kumah, also the General Overseer of Disciples of Christ Ministries, the late Legislator had been battling a severe, previously undiagnosed illness for nearly a year.
She revealed that the precise nature of the illness was confirmed during a medical visit to Germany in August 2023.
Dispelling the widely speculated allegations of food poisoning in an interview, Apostle Kumah emphasized that it was the prolonged struggle that led to Dr Kumah’s passing and not food poisoning as some had alleged.
Apostle Kumah expressed her deep concern regarding the dissemination of false information. She specifically addressed the actions of Mr. Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, who had publicly attributed Dr. Kumah’s death to poisoning without providing any evidence.
“Why is it that someone (referring to Captain Smart) has been this bold to claim that he knows for a fact that a person like John Kumah who has served his country virtually all his life, was poisoned, while he was working for his country and party (New Patriotic Party)? Why should we sit down and not bring that person to book?” she asked.
“If it is true that a person who is not dead but alive claims that he knows how my husband (John Kumah) died and that he was poisoned, and that person is still moving around for the past three weeks, it hurts me, it saddens me and I do not know how best to express my frustrations about these false claims by Captain Smart,” she added.
Dr. Kumah’s final moments were marked by a courageous fight for life. While en route to Accra for further medical treatment in Germany, his health deteriorated rapidly. Despite the best efforts of the medical team at Suhum Government Hospital, he succumbed to his illness on March 7, 2024.
Dr. John Kumah’s passing signifies a significant loss for Ghana. His dedication to public service and economic development has left an undeniable mark on the nation.
Furthermore, Apostle Lilian’s courageous efforts to clarify the circumstances surrounding his death to ensure that his true legacy – one of dedication, service, and innovation – will continue to inspire future generations.
Beyond the immediate tragedy, Dr. Kumah’s life stands as a testament to his dedication to public service and economic development. A distinguished lawyer and entrepreneur, he forged a distinguished career marked by leadership, creativity, and a commitment to youth empowerment.
His tenure as the first CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) stands as a significant accomplishment. Under his guidance, the NEIP empowered about 7,000 thousand aspiring entrepreneurs, leaving a lasting impact on the Ghanaian economy.
