Kotoko beat Hearts to win inaugural Democracy Cup; MPs rout ex-Black Stars

Asante Kotoko won the inaugural Democracy Cup on Wednesday, July 17th, by defeating Hearts of Oak with a score of 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

This victory continued Kotoko’s dominance over Hearts of Oak.

Justice Blay scored the first goal for Kotoko from a penalty after 30 minutes. Despite having opportunities, Kotoko only scored once in the first half.

Hearts of Oak scored first in the second half with a goal from Asamoah Boateng, levelling the game.

However, Amidu restored Kotoko’s lead later in the game, making the score 2-1.

Despite a late effort from Hearts, Asante Kotoko secured their win, marking their third victory of the 2023/24 season over Hearts of Oak.

This win also earned Kotoko the chance to play a friendly match against DC United later this year.

In addition, a team from Parliament, consisting of Members of Parliament and staff, defeated the ex-Black Stars team led by Stephen Appiah with a score of 3-1 in the opening match.

The Democracy Cup was instituted by Parliament to commemorate 30 years of Parliamentary Democracy in Ghana.
