Leaked tape: Parliament sets up 7-member Special Committee to probe plot to remove IGP

The Speaker of Parliament has directed the establishment of a 7-member Special Committee in response to the urgent public interest surrounding a leaked audio recording involving a plot to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Geroge Akuffo Dampare.

The committee is tasked with investigating the authenticity of the recording and probing the conspiracy to remove the current IGP, among other matters disclosed in the audio.

Deputy Minority leader Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, who initially raised the issue, highlighted the importance of the investigation.

He stated, “The subject matter of the audio recording is of urgent public interest, and it is imperative for Parliament to delve into its authenticity.”

In accordance with Article 72 of the Standing Orders, Speaker Alban Bagbin instructed the Deputy Minority leader to submit the urgent statement in writing, which was fulfilled and presented to the House.

He then mandated that the Special Committee be composed of three members from both the Majority and Minority caucuses, with an additional technical expert making up the seventh member.

He said, “Leadership will nominate three members from each side of the house. And we’ll get a technical person to add to make seven. This Special Committee will investigate this matter and then submit a report.”

The setting up of the Special Committee marks a significant development in addressing the concerns surrounding the leaked audio and its potential implications for the IGP’s position.

The investigation aims to provide clarity on the recording’s authenticity and shed light on the conspiracy it reveals.

Furthermore, the committee will have the authority to recommend appropriate sanctions for those found responsible and propose any necessary reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The leadership of the House has one week to submit the names of members they want to be part of the Committee.
