Scripture Reading: Psalm 2

THE LORD SHALL LAUGH

He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure: Psalm 2:4–5

From the beginning, Psalm 2 shows us a scene on earth of kings and rulers in rebellion against the Lord and His anointed.

These powerful rulers set themselves against the Lord and conspire to break His rule. From an earthly point of view, their rebellion seems formidable.

Now the scene shifts from earth to heaven to show us God’s response to the rebellious kings and rulers. How does God see this mutiny against His will?

As God watches all the schemes of the kings and rulers of the earth, He laughs. God “laughs” at the vain and futile efforts of man to escape from His rule.

Our God does not get disturbed by the plans of the wicked. He just sits in heaven and laughs. The word that the passage translates as ‘laugh’ is, ‘to be amused, to joke, or make fun of’.

From God’s perspective in heaven, those who rise against Him and His children are jokers. Anytime the enemy rises strongly against you, as a child of God, just remember how God responds to threats. He laughs!

The Lord responds to them in three ways:

  1. The Lord shall hold them in derision. That simply means the Lord shall see them as weak and tiny creatures and ridicule their efforts. Almighty God mocks the actions of those who think so highly of themselves as to imagine that they can upset His plans.

On earth, we get disturbed when we see the efforts of intellectuals, scientists, politicians, entertainers and other influencers to discredit God in heaven, God mocks their arrogance.

  1. The Lord shall speak to them in His wrath. After the laughter comes the voice. The voice of the Lord thunders with a terrifying and robust sound against those who oppose His purposes. His voice shakes the foundations of systems and institutions.
  2. The Lord shall distress them. After the Lord roars with His voice, He then troubles the wicked. God messes up the plans of evil rulers. He throws all their efforts out of joint.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you sit enthroned above all gods. I am glad that all the plans of the wicked are laughable to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
