Mahama alleges $270M intended for GIIF diverted to Akufo-Addo’s in-law to build a hotel

Former President John Dramani Mahama has raised serious allegations against the current administration, claiming an amount of $270 million, originally designated for the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) during his tenure, has been misused by President Akufo-Addo’s government.

Mahama stated, “He has distributed some to his brother-law which he is using to build Pullman Hotel, it’s the money I left in GII. Stabilization fund, I left 300 million dollars with the aim of covering up for the economy should an unforeseen circumstance occur.”

Speaking to the media, Mahama emphasized that this money was set aside to settle a debt incurred by former President John Agyekum Kuffour, scheduled for payment in October 2017.

He further explained that he had left funds in the GIIF to attract investments into infrastructure, which have allegedly been redirected to support the construction of the Pullman Hotel.

Mahama questioned how the Akufo-Addo government managed to create such a troubled situation, considering the stable economy he claims to have left behind.

He continued, “I left money there, so when Akufo-Addo assumed office he took that money to pay the debt. I left 270 million dollars in Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) that was to be used as a vehicle to attract investments into infrastructure, but that money has been distributed.”

The former president also pointed out that these funds were intended to provide a financial buffer for Ghana in case unforeseen circumstances threatened the country.

Mahama, however, expressed confidence in his party’s ability to rectify the challenges and corruption that have emerged during the Akufo-Addo government’s tenure.
