Mahama calls for probe into deaths during 2020 and 2024 Elections

President John Dramani Mahama has officially called for an immediate investigation into the deaths of eight Ghanaian citizens during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

Through a letter addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the President emphasized the need for justice and transparency in addressing the tragic incidents that marred the country’s democratic process.

The letter, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, proposed a comprehensive probe to identify and prosecute those responsible.

“This is not just about justice for the eight lives lost; it is about safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s democracy,” the letter states.

The request outlines key recommendations, including the establishment of a dedicated investigative taskforce, collaboration with eyewitnesses and victims’ families, and the use of advanced forensic techniques to analyze crime scene evidence.

“We cannot allow such tragic incidents to go unanswered. It is imperative that we ensure accountability and prevent a recurrence in future elections,” Dr. Mahama remarked.

The letter also urged a review of the actions of security personnel deployed at affected polling stations and called for collaboration with the Electoral Commission and other agencies to provide additional context to the investigations.

Addressing the need for public trust, the letter requested periodic updates on the investigation’s progress.

“Transparency is key to restoring public confidence. The families of the victims and all Ghanaians deserve to know that the truth will be uncovered,” it emphasized.

Ghanaians have continued to demand for justice and accountability since the incidents of the 2020 elections, underscoring the importance of safeguarding the country’s democratic legacy.
