Mahama cautions military personnel over electoral violence

Former President John Dramani Mahama has issued a strong caution to military personnel allegedly involved in violent disruptions during the declaration of parliamentary results in some constituencies.

In a statement posted on his official X account, the former President condemned the actions of what he described as “unscrupulous military personnel” and cautioned them against engaging in activities that undermine the democratic process.

“My attention has been drawn to the violent activities of some unscrupulous military personnel, deployed to cause mayhem and disrupt the declaration of parliamentary results in some constituencies.”

“This is to caution the personnel involved that they will be held individually liable and responsible for their actions,” he added.

The former president’s statement comes amid heightened tensions in some areas following reports of disturbances during the collation of election results.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) had earlier stated that the military will not be deployed to polling stations unless a formal request is made by the election security team managed by the police.

The sudden arrival of some military persons at some polling stations causes agitations and resistance from some polling agents leading to standoffs.

The Military high command is yet to respond to these allegations, but security analysts emphasize the importance of maintaining neutrality and professionalism in military deployments during electoral processes.
