Medeama Sporting Club has revived its quest to qualify to the semifinal stage of the 2023-2024 CAF Champions League semifinal stage by clinching a crucial win over Algerian side CR Belouizdad.
The Tarkwa side beat Belouizdad 2-1 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Match Day 2 of the Champions League group stage.
Beating Belouizdad marks a historic point in the club’s history since it is the Yellow and Mauve’s first ever win at this stage of Africa’s premier club competition.
After losing 3-0 to Egyptian side Al-Ahly to commence its run in the group stage, Medeama fell behind to an Abdelraouf Benguit converted penalty in the 39th minute.
Medeama got the equalizer on the stroke of half time through Daniel Lomotey who turned Kamaradin Mamudi’s free kick shot attempt into the net.
Augustine Evans Adotey’s side dominated possession in the second half accounting for 62% of the count while making eight goal attempts.
Medeama’s pressure finally paid off in the 93rd minute when Kwadwo Amoako’s cross was met by Mamudi who directed the ball to the left side of the goal in dramatic fashion.
Another home game in Kumasi against Tanzanian side Young Africans on Friday, December 8 is next for Medeama.
