Media General Ghana Limited has officially reported Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to the Ghana Police Service following what it describes as ‘an unprovoked physical act’ and subsequent threats of violence against its journalists.
The incident occurred during a recent NPP press conference, where Alhaji Masawudu was captured on video deliberately pushing away a microphone belonging to TV3, the company’s flagship television station.
According to a press release from Media General, the action was done ‘in full view of other media personnel and party executives.’
Media General condemned the actions and words of the NPP executive, especially following a radio interview on ASHH FM where Alhaji Masawudu allegedly issued further threats.
“Mr. Masawudu further issued a direct threat, stating that Media General journalists would be physically assaulted should they attend future NPP events.”
“These statements and actions constitute an attack not only on Media General but on the constitutional right to press freedom and the safety of all journalists across the country,” the statement said.
The company has since lodged a formal complaint with the Ghana Police Service and is calling for a full investigation.
The organization is also calling on civil society groups, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), and other stakeholders to rally in defense of media freedoms.
Despite the threats, the company remains resolute in its mission.
“Media General remains committed to upholding the highest standards of journalism and will not be intimidated or deterred in its pursuit of truth and the public’s right to information,” the statement concluded.
