Menzgold customers petition Speaker Bagbin: Parliament to set up Committee to probe ‘scam’

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is set to constitute a Five-Member Committee to investigate a petition presented by aggrieved Menzgold customers.

The committee will be tasked with examining the concerns raised in the petition and submitting a report for consideration by the House.

The Speaker disclosed this on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by some aggrieved Menzgold customers.

Leader of the group, Mr. Fred Forson shared the hardships faced by the members and indicated it had resulted in 210 reported deaths recently. He earnestly requested the Speaker to handle the motion expeditiously.

Speaker Alban Bagbin emphasized that the petition had followed the proper procedures required to become a motion and assured it would be admitted before the House goes on recess.

He further stated that the Committee would thoroughly assess the grievances of the affected customers when the House reconvenes after recess.

The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Nelson Kwame Etse Dafeamekpor, who submitted the petition to the Speaker, acknowledged the challenges posed by the matter being before the court.

He, however, clarified that only the criminal aspect is sub judice, leaving room for the Speaker to admit it as a motion for the House to consider the Committee’s report.

The Speaker expressed his appreciation for their visit and assured them that their concerns would receive due attention.

The group conveyed their gratitude to the Speaker and expressed hope that their grievances would be resolved promptly.

The establishment of the Committee signals a step towards addressing the Menzgold customers’ issues, and the House’s consideration of the Committee’s report could provide a significant step towards bringing closure to the long-standing concerns of the affected customers.
