Minority Members on the Appointments Committee of Parliament have not voted on the President’s nominee for the position of Chief Justice, Mrs. Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
A statement issued by Minority Chief Whip, Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, explained this was due to the unavailability of the reasoned judgment of the Supreme Court in the matter of the member for Assin North, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson.
It noted that the Appointments Committee in 2019 vetted and approved the nominee as a justice of the Supreme Court.

“However, it is imperative for Members of the Minority on the Committee to evaluate the decisions of the nominee on all other cases, including the James Gyakye Quayson case since the vetting in 2019.”
“We successfully evaluated the nominee on all relevant criteria except the outstanding matter of James Gyakye Quayson which would enable us, to come to a decision,” the statement said.
“We expect the reasoned judgment of the court on this matter by 7th June 2023 to finalize our decision.
“We have duly communicated our challenge to our colleagues on the Majority side and expect their cooperation.”
Minority leader Dr. Casiel Ato Forson had indicated in his preliminary remarks before the vetting noted the session will focus on evaluating the rulings and judgments she has participated in since she was appointed to the Supreme Court.
He stated the Minority has been able to secure most of these rulings and judgments except the recent one involving the Assin North election petition.
“The Minority should be given the opportunity to get a copy of the ruling so we can able to ask her questions on her ruling.”
“We’re going to start the vetting using the information. However, we cannot conclude on the matter until we have the ruling on the latest judgment,” he said.
