Minority to refile motion for COVID-19 expenditure probe

The Minority in Parliament has resurrected its demand for a probe into COVID-19 expenditure.

This follows a viral audio recording of NPP Northern Regional vice Chairperson, Felicia Tetteh detailing funds meant for fighting the pandemic were distributed among party leaders and candidates.

Addressing the Parliamentary press corps, Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu stated the revelations are a vindication of the position of his side and that of former President John Mahama that funds for the pandemic were used to prosecute the NPP’s election 2020 campaign.

The Tamale South MP called on President Akufo-Addo to if minded by tenets of accountability institute a probe into the matter.

According to the Majority Leader, the revelation “makes our call for an eminent investigation of the highly anomalous COVID expenditures pending to be probed.”

He added that the expenditure must be “Probed by Parliament or by the Auditor General or President Nana Addo Danquah [if he] has any respect for tenets and values of accountability and transparency to authorize a public enquiry into how the over GHC19billion were disbursed and utilized.”

He continued: “We now understand how a motion to probe COVID by an institution which should be the most fundamental institution and guardian of the public purse Parliament will dismiss the motion even at birth, by actors of the New Patriotic Party political administration.”

He, however, assured his side will resubmit a motion which was rejected by First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu for a bipartisan probe into the COVID-19 expenditure.
