Mobile money interoperability hits ‘record’ GH¢1.1bn

Mobile money interoperability that is the transfer of cash from one network to another registered its biggest transaction value of a little above GH¢1.11 billion in December last year.

It has since dropped, recording GH¢990.7 million in February this year.

According to the Summary of Economic and Financial Data, mobile money interoperability had grown by more than 1000% since it was introduced a couple of year ago. 

The total number of transactions in December 2020 was also 6.3 million, as compared with 6.2 million in February 2021 

The data also indicated that MoMo transactions reached its all-time high of GH¢67.9 billion in February 2021, GH¢200 million cedis more than during the Christmas festivity. 

Before December, the transactions were ranging within the GH¢40 and GH¢50 billion bracket per month, for the greater part of last year.

Certainly, mobile money payments have come to stay and far bigger transactions are expected to be witnessed, going forward into the future. 

Meanwhile, registered mobile money accounts hit 40.9 million, with active mobile money account holders at 17.5 million.

Registered MoMo agents were 465,000, whilst active agents were 356,000 at the end of February 2021.

For ezwich, the total transaction value was estimated at GH¢786 million In February 2021. 

This is against GH¢1.1 billion and GH¢882 million in November and December 2020 respectively.
