Mother of the Rocks: Chiefs and People of Sankana honour Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang with title of ‘Pognaa Piirima’

The Chiefs and People of the Sankana Traditional Council have bestowed upon Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang the title of “Pognaa Piirima,” which translates to “Mother of the Rocks.”

The running mate to the NDC’s 2024 flagbearer, former President Mahama, was honoured for her selfless devotion to the development of the Sankana Traditional Area.

Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang was given the title at Sankana in the Upper West Region of Ghana during the 2024 Kalibi Tigri Festival.

This year’s festival was especially significant for Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, who has deep personal and professional ties to the community.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s bond with Sankana is rooted in her early academic endeavours. “Sankana holds sentimental value to me because some of my earliest research was done here,” she said.

Also during her time as Education Minister, she again played a huge role in enhancing educational facilities in the community.

The title of “Pognaa Piirima” was bestowed upon Prof. Opoku-Agyemang by the Paramount Chief, Naa Sarkoe Mornah III in recognition of her years of collaboration and friendship with the community.

Taking to her social media holds, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed her gratitude for the honour given to her.

“I have been honoured with the title of “Pognaa Piirima: Mother of the Rocks” by the Paramount Chief and the people of Sankana. This title is a recognition of the many years of collaboration and friendship I have shared with this community. I do not take up this honour lightly, as it carries a profound responsibility to the region,” she added.
