National Cathedral can’t save anybody; give budget allocation to security agencies – Dr Asah Asante

A Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana has asked the government to suspend the construction of the controversial National Cathedral.

Dr Kwame Asah-Asante says the project is of no importance to the country.

He said the cathedral cannot save anyone from dying and so he does not see any justification for its construction.

He thinks budgetary allocation to the project can be added to that of the security agencies to help boost their effectiveness.

“Take the National Cathedral money and give it to the security people to protect us. The cathedral cannot protect anybody.

“There is nobody that is dying that we need the cathedral to protect. We need the people alive. So the security people must be given their money,” he said on JoyNews on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Minority in Parliament voted against ₵80 million cedis budgetary allocation to the construction of the National Cathedral project.

The Ranking Member on the Trades and Industry Committee, Armah Kofi Buah said they were not satisfied with the documentation provided.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has defended the need to complete the construction of the project.

He insisted that the controversial project will signify an appreciation to God who he believes has spared the country from conflicts and plagues over the years.

“Sparing us the ravages of civil war that have bedevilled the histories of virtually all our neighbours and the outbreak of deadly mass epidemics but also as a rallying point for the entire Christian community of Ghana, which represents seventy-plus per cent of the population.”
