The National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency office in Talensi, Upper East Region, was set on fire around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5.
Eyewitnesses say the attack occurred shortly after John Millim Naabwomya was announced as the party’s nominee for District Chief Executive (DCE).
Naabwomya’s nomination has sparked intense opposition among some party members and supporters, who argue he is unpopular and was selected due to his alleged loyalty to the Paramount Chief of Talensi, Tongraan Nanlebegtang Kugbilsong, rather than through grassroots consensus.
Concerns have also been raised over his alleged links to Chinese mining companies, with residents fearing he may favor the interests of the Chinese mining companies over community welfare.
A formal petition was submitted in January 2025 urging the party’s regional leadership to reject his nomination.
The perpetrators of the arson are yet to be identified.
