National Security issues red alert on imminent terrorist attacks

Ministry of Nationsl Security has issued a terrorist alert following an attack in neighbouring Togo that killed eight soldiers and wounded as many as 13 others.

The Ministry indicated it is collaborating with relevant state security and intelligences to institute measures to avert any terrorist attacks in the country.

A statement from the Ministry warned that in view of the growing threats of terrorism from the sub-region, and the expansionist drive of terrorist groups towards coastal West-African States, with a renewed modus operandi of targeting public gatherings, including places of worship, it is imperative that precautional measures are taken by all stakeholders.

The statement urged religious outfits to enhance security, particularly in areas where mass gatherings are conducted.

“These measures may include, but not limited to, the installation of CCTV cameras at designated places of worship, and engaging the services of approved Private security guards, among others.”

The Ministry indicated though the directive has become necessary, it will continue to institute measures aimed at safeguarding the peace and security of the country.

Neighbouring Togo suffered its first terrorist attack in the northern part of the country, which has previously spared from violence.

At around 3 a.m., a forward post of the Operation Kondjouaré, located in the locality of Kpinkankandi, was the object of the violent terrorist attack carried out by unidentified heavily armed individuals.

This is the first deadly “terrorist” attack in Togo, where the army is deployed in the north to deal with the threat of violence from jihadist groups in neighboring Burkina Faso.

Togo had recorded only one attack in November 2021.
