Staff of the National Service Authority (NSA) have condemned the increasing interference of political party foot soldiers in the Authority’s operations, particularly in matters concerning recruitment and internal transfers.
The staff, in a press release addressed copied to the Acting Director-General of the NSA and the General Secretary of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU), expressed deep concern over what they described as an attempt by partisan actors to hijack the operations of the NSA, warning that such actions threaten the integrity of public institutions and undermine democratic principles.
“We strongly condemn the practice of political party foot soldiers attempting to hijack the National Service Authority. This phenomenon undermines the principle of democracy, erodes public trust, and compromises the integrity of our institutions,” the statement read.
The release emphasized that the NSA is a public institution governed by the Public Services Commission and operates under clearly defined legal frameworks, including the recently passed National Service Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1119), the Public Services Commission Act, 1994 (Act 482), and Article 195 of the 1992 Constitution.
“Our recruitments and transfers are done in line with our approved Scheme of Service and in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. These decisions are not at the mercy of any group or individual’s call,” Chairman of the NSA Staff, Ayirebi Adubofour stated.
The statement also called on the youth in the Western Region to exercise restraint and allow management to carry out its mandate without undue pressure or intimidation.
“We urge the youth to allow the Management of the Authority to function as defined by the laws and statutes. Any interference undermines not just the institution but also the credibility of national service as a whole,” the Chairman added.
Staff further urged the Management of the NSA to uphold its independence and resist any external influence that could erode public confidence in its operations.
“We are equally calling on Management to adhere to the guiding principles and protect the integrity of the Authority.”
The staff also appealed to the government to safeguard the NSA and similar institutions from political influence.
