NDC warns security agencies against intimidation ahead of 2024 elections

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has issued a stern warning to the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies as the 2024 general elections approach.

He emphasized that no Ghanaian law should be used to intimidate or coerce citizens and that the NDC would not tolerate any state agency’s attempts to intimidate its supporters.

He was speaking at a press conference on Saturday, June 8, following the release of the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, from police custody,

The NDC Chairman declared that the opposition would fight to ensure the rights of its members are respected.

“The laws of the country are meant for all of us. There should be no discrimination in applying them. We will not be victims of the peace that the country enjoys.

“Freedom is not free. We will fight for freedom. We will not allow the coercive powers of the state to be used against us,” he stated.

Phillis Naa Koryoo was detained at the Cantonments Police Station on Friday, June 7, after being summoned by the police.

Her detention sparked outrage among NDC supporters, who gathered at the police station to demand her release.

The incident drew widespread condemnation, including from former president John Dramani Mahama.

Naa Koryoo’s assistant, Delali Sewarkpor, described the detention as political persecution orchestrated by elements within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
