New Force spokesperson rearrested despite withdrawal of false declaration charges

The Spokesperson for the New Force political movement, Shalimar Abbiusi, was re-arrested shortly after charges of obtaining a student permit with false declarations were withdrawn in court on Tuesday.

Abbiusi, a Belgian national, was initially charged for allegedly presenting false documents indicating her enrollment at the Ghana Christian University College to obtain a residence permit.

Last week, she was granted bail amounting to GH¢20,000, with the case expected to go into full trial on Tuesday.

However, prosecutors from the immigration service, led by ACI Adolf Aboagye Asenso, revealed in court that they had received instructions to withdraw the case.

Consequently, the New Force Spokersperson was discharged, and the case was officially struck out.

Moments after her release, Abbiusi was apprehended once again by an immigration van, raising concerns and speculation about the motive behind the re-arrest.

The decision to re-arrest Abbiusi occurred despite the withdrawal of the case.

Expressing their dismay, Abbiusi’s legal team, led by Francis Xavier Sosu, accused the immigration service of potentially plotting to deport the accused.

Sosu criticized the manner of the re-arrest, stating, “If you want the person in your office, from here we will come to your office. What kind of international disgrace is this? Are we living in a democracy or are we living in a jungle?”

Sosu further questioned the immigration officers’ behaviour, expressing disappointment and highlighting the potential negative signal sent to the international community.

He emphasized transparency and adherence to due process, particularly when dealing with foreign nationals.
