NMC extends deadline for Onua Radio/TV, Captain Smart to apologise for ‘inciteful’ broadcast

The National Media Commission (NMC) has granted an extension for Onua TV/FM and Captain Smart to apologize for their incitement on air.

The deadline for the apology has been postponed to November 24, 2023.

The NMC accused Captain Smart of directly insulting the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and other Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) by referring to them as “beasts” during a recent broadcast.

Captain Smart had also made unproven allegations that these officers embezzled funds meant for peacekeeping soldiers.

As a result, the NMC ordered Onua TV/FM and Captain Smart to retract the insults and apologize to the CDS, his commanders, and the Ghanaian public for the use of inappropriate language.

Additionally, the station was required to take measures to stop such dangerous behaviour and improve its regulatory compliance capacity.

However, Onua TV/FM allegedly failed to comply with the directives of the commission in its letter dated November 21, 2023.

The NMC responded by labelling the letter as a ploy to avoid taking responsibility and extended the deadline to November 24, 2023.

The commission warned that failure to meet the extended deadline would result in further action without further reference to the station.
