NPP backs Majority boycott: Urges focus on re-election campaign

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has thrown its full support behind the decision of the Majority Caucus to boycott parliamentary proceedings in protest against what they describe as unconstitutional actions by Speaker Alban Bagbin.

The boycott stems from the Speaker’s controversial ruling on October 17, 2024, which declared four parliamentary seats vacant, sparking outrage within the Majority and across the party’s leadership.

In a statement signed by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party affirms support for its MPs in what it called a fight against “politically motivated injustice.”

The NPP leadership stressed the Speaker’s decision as a dangerous overreach of his powers, threatening the balance of power in Parliament.

The NPP leadership advised its MPs, particularly those running for re-election in the 2024 parliamentary elections, to take advantage of the boycott period to focus on their campaigns.

The party emphasized the importance of securing an overwhelming majority in the next Parliament, which is key to ensuring smoother governance for their presidential candidate if elected.

The statement follows an escalating political crisis triggered by Speaker Bagbin’s ruling, which the Majority has called an unconstitutional attempt to reconfigure Parliament.
