Aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) national chairman, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, has assured that if elected to the position at the national delegates conference he will ensure the party breaks the famous 8-year jinx in government.
The chairmanship hopeful gave the assurance during a courtesy call on the Regional Minister for Oti, Hon. Joshua Makabu, at his residence in Dambai.
The two discussed the need to build a united party with effective structures to ensure the NPP wins the 2024 elections to extend its reign by another four more years.
The regional minister applauded Prof. Akumfi for his decision to contest the chairmanship and described him as his mentor and father.
He indicated that he had followed the renowned Professor over the years and is proud to associate himself with his achievements in academia and politics.
Earlier in the day, Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi joined the Muslim community in Kajaji to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr before crossing the Volta and Oti rivers to Dambai, the Oti regional capital.
A former minister and a former Member of Parliament, Mr. Ameyaw-Akumfi virtually set off a storm when declared his intention to contest the NPP’s chairmanship.
The former Minister is no novice when it comes to NPP and national politics and has built his own base ready to shake up the party.
He was appointed Minister of Education from 2001 to 2003 and Minister of Ports Habours and Railways from 2003 to 2009 by former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
In 2008, he contested and won the Techiman North seat for the first time for the NPP after two failed attempts and served as the ranking member, Parliamentary Committee for Science Environment and Technology.
He has served on several committees of the NPP with commitment and dedication and has been a member of the NPP National Council since 2017 till date.
He is also a member of the NPP National Council of Elders.
To date, Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), having been appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017.
He is also a member of the Ministerial advisory boards of the Ministries of Transport and Tourism from 2017 till date.
