NPP: Chief of Staff eligible to vote in delegates conference – Presidential Election Committee

The Presidential Election Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has provided clarity regarding the voting eligibility of Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, in the party’s upcoming special delegates’ conference.

According to the committee, Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare holds a membership position within the NPP National Executive Committee (NEC). This position, which designates her as a representative of the patrons at the NEC, entitles her to participate in the voting process.

The committee’s explanation was prompted by concerns raised by the campaign team of Alan Kyerematen, the former Minister of Trade and Industry. Alan Kyerematen’s team had identified certain irregularities in the Register for the Special Delegates Conference of the party, leading to questions about the eligibility of specific individuals, including the Chief of Staff, to vote.

In a letter dated August 2 addressed to the chairman of the Presidential Elections Committee, the Alan for President (A4P) Campaign underscored the importance of addressing these concerns prior to the scheduled super delegates’ conference on August 26.

Notably, the letter did not specify the nature of the anomalies or comments in the register that prompted these concerns.

Particularly, the letter addressed the Chief of Staff’s status, stating, “The Chief of Staff (Cos) has been listed to vote under the category of NEC. However, per the Constitution, the Office of COS is not part of the NEC. Therefore, the Hon. Chief of Staff is not entitled to vote.” The campaign team advocated for rectifying these issues to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the process.

The NPP Presidential Election Committee responded by reaffirming that Akosua Frema Osei-Opare holds a valid position within the National Executive Committee, making her eligible to vote.

“An issue was raised about the status of Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare. Per the records of the Party, Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare is a member of the National Executive Committee. By virtue of her being a representative of the patrons at NEC, gives her the right to vote,” the Committee stated.
