The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the prosecution of individuals involved in what it described as acts of ‘vandalism and violence’ during a demonstration organized by the group Democracy Hub.
The arrests, prosecution and detention of some of the protesters have drawn wide condemnation.
In a statement issued by the National Youth Organizer of the NPP, Salam Mustapha, the Youth Wing condemned the actions of those it described as “miscreants and hooligans masquerading as demonstrators.”
The Wing urged swift legal action against the perpetrators.
“We firmly believe that individuals who take the law into their own hands and commit such criminal acts under the guise of a demonstration must be held accountable and face the full rigours of the law in our courts,” Mustapha said.
The NPP Youth Wing emphasized that law and order are critical to maintaining peace and security, adding that failing to prosecute those involved in the recent violence would encourage future acts of impunity.
“The non-prosecution of these miscreants who caused ample public discomfort will serve as a motivation for more serious acts to come in the future, as it will develop a culture of impunity,” Mustapha stated.
While expressing support for the constitutional right to peaceful protest, the NPP Youth Wing stressed that unlawful actions such as vandalism and destruction of property must be condemned without fear of political or social backlash.
“It is important to emphasize that acts of vandalism, destruction of property, and other unlawful actions must be unequivocally condemned without fear of political, religious, or ethnic repercussions for speaking out against such acts,” Mustapha added.
The Youth Wing called on all Ghanaians to support the police in their efforts to bring those responsible to justice, stressing the importance of maintaining the rule of law and preventing further chaos.
“The millions of enraged Ghanaians who watched with horror the destruction of property and attack on the public are waiting for justice from the police. We must establish that no one or group is above the law and that crime is punishable,” Mustapha stressed
