NPP’s Haruna Mohammed challenges Special Prosecutor’s findings on Mahama in Airbus scandal

The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has expressed scepticism over the Special Prosecutor’s (SP) investigation into the Airbus SE ‘scandal.

He argued that the probe was insufficient to exonerate former President John Mahama.

In an exclusive interview with TV3 on Friday, August 9, Mohammed claimed that the Special Prosecutor lacked the necessary resources to conduct a thorough investigation, which led to the decision to clear Mahama.

He pointed out that the SP’s report acknowledged gaps in the evidence gathered, casting doubt on the conclusion.

“The Special Prosecutor himself admitted that he did not have all the facts necessary to carry out a comprehensive investigation.”

“I don’t believe this amounts to exoneration. The report is merely an opinion, not a definitive legal conclusion, especially when it admits to incomplete information.”

Mohammed emphasized that the SP’s report should not be seen as a final judgment on the matter.

“The Special Prosecutor identified Mahama as Government Official One in the Airbus case, but this investigative report does not hold the same weight as a court judgment.”

“If the facts are incomplete, how can we be certain there were no illicit payments? This is why, in matters like these, we always say there are three sides to a story,” he argued.

On Thursday, August 8, the Office of the Special Prosecutor confirmed that former President John Mahama was indeed the individual referred to as “Government Official One” by the UK and US courts during their investigations into the Airbus SE scandal.

“The OSP confirms the identity of the following individuals. The individual described as Government Official One by the UK court and Individual One by the US court is John Dramani Mahama. He is a citizen of Ghana and was the Vice President of Ghana from January 7, 2009, to July 24, 2012,” the OSP stated in a press briefing.
