NSS Probes its Ashanti Region Director

The management of the National Service Scheme (NSS) has said its attention has been drawn to the happening at the Manhyia Hospital involving Mr Alex Opoku-Mensah, the Ashanti Region Director of the scheme and a member of the staff of the hospital.

The management described the situation as “unfortunate” and has “since the development invited the officer for preliminary investigations into the incident.”

“The management of the scheme regrets the unfortunate incident and wishes to reiterate its commitment and assurance to the public and the nursing fraternity of our dedication to get this matter resolved,” a statement said on Tuesday November 29.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) issued a 72-hour ultimatum for his immediate dismissal.

The livid nurses threatened to withdraw their services at the hospital if he was not sacked.

This was on the heels of an audio recording emanated from Manhyia District Hospital in the Ashanti Region in which a male voice purported to be that of Ashanti Region NSS director is heard raining insults on a nurse.

Speaking exclusively on Akoma FM‘s current affairs and political show GhanAkoma Tuesday, November 29, Ashanti Region Chairman for GRNMA Jones Afriyie Anto told host of the show Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin that “it is rather unfortunate that a whole regional director of National Service Scheme rains insults on a nurse and for that matter all nurses in Ghana. We are calling for the immediate dismissal of the director else we will withdraw all our services from the Manhyia District Hospital”.

Meanwhile, Mr Opoku-Mensah has apologized for his action.

He says it has never been his style as a leader.

“I understand the disappointment and appreciate the inconvenience my action has caused the general public as well as the Nursing FRATERNITY and Manhyia Hospital.

“This has never been my style but for a genuine reason to mediate a persistent issue between my daughter(Doctor) and a colleague nurse who I as well consider my daughter.

“I do apologize for any mishap and assure all, there shall not be a repetition of such. I look forward to maintaining a cordial relationship between any affected person,” he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday November 29.
