Ntim Fordjour blasts Mahama for anti-LGBTQ+ bill U-turn

Member of Parliament for Assin South and a key sponsor of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of abandoning his commitment to the controversial legislation.

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour who played a pivotal role in pushing the bill through the 8th Parliament, has criticized the President for what he sees as a blatant betrayal of trust.

According to him, President Mahama who vocally supported the bill while in opposition, has now pivoted to less confrontational measures, such as advocating for curriculum changes instead of legislation.

“President Mahama loudly assured Ghanaians and the Clergy that he would assent to this bill without hesitation. His current stance is a complete U-turn and undermines the importance of this legislation,” Rev. Fordjour declared.

The Assin South MP accused the President of using the bill for political leverage, particularly during the Assin North by-election and meetings with religious leaders, only to abandon it after securing electoral gains.

“This is nothing short of political expediency. He campaigned vigorously on his promise to support the bill, and now he wants to distance himself. It’s disappointing and untrustworthy,” Rev. Fordjour fumed.

Stressing the widespread popularity of the bill in the run up to the 2024 December elections, Rev. Fordjour emphasized that 73% of Ghanaians support its passage, a sentiment he says Mahama is ignoring today in favour of appeasing external pressures.

“Will he honor his promise, or will he hide behind the guise of ‘curriculum changes’ to escape his obligations?  The nation is watching closely,” he warned, calling on the Clergy, traditional rulers, and the public to hold Mahama accountable.

Rev. Fordjour expressed confidence that the bill, in its current form, would still make it to the President’s desk and challenged Mahama to stop equivocating and demonstrate genuine leadership.

“Ghanaians deserve honesty, not political doublespeak. President Mahama must either stand by his word or admit he has no intention of delivering on this promise,” Rev. Fordjour stressed, labelling the President’s shift as a betrayal of the nation’s values and trust.
