Nyaho-Tamakloe warns EC: Address NDC’s concerns or risk chaos

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to address the concerns raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the voter register.

He cautioned that failure to resolve the issues could lead to chaos in the country.

Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight show on Wednesday, September 18, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed concern over the EC’s handling of the voter register, particularly in light of the recent ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration by the NDC. He warned that the refusal to address these concerns could have dire consequences.

“I have said time and again that when a political party is set to win an election, you can see it in any civilised country. We have to be careful. Once again, I want to appeal to Jean Mensa to be cautious. She should ensure that the concerns and demands of these political parties are addressed because if she’s not careful, she could lead this country into destruction. It can happen,” he stated.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also called for a forensic audit of the voter register, suggesting that transparency is key to dispelling doubts about the electoral process. “All Jean Mensa has to do is allow a forensic audit. If she refuses to do that, it will convince all thinking Ghanaians that something is being hidden,” he added.

The NDC held the ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration on Tuesday, September 17, to push for a more transparent and credible voter register ahead of the December 2024 elections. The party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, emphasized that their demand was straightforward: a free, fair, and transparent election backed by a credible voter register.

“Our demand is simple,” Asiedu Nketia said. “We want the EC to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election and a credible register is central to that goal. Without the right of self-determination, democracy is as good as gone. Ghana’s democracy is under serious threat now, but we shall overcome.”

The EC has in response,’ assured the public and the NDC that the voter register process was still in its early stages and promised to deliver a credible final register before the 2024 elections.

“The Commission wishes to assure the general public that the process of producing the Final Register is in its early stages. The Commission is mindful that the Voters Register is the bedrock of credible, fair, and transparent elections.”

“We assure the NDC and all stakeholders of our commitment to delivering a credible and robust Final Register ahead of the December 2024 Elections. In the meantime, our doors remain open. We look forward to engaging the NDC on their concerns,” the EC said in a statement.
