The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Odododidoo constituency, Nii Lante Vanderpuye has been arrested by police from the Greater Accra Regional Command.
His research assistant, Sammy Laryea disclosed this in a Citi News interview on Tuesday, December 8, 2020.
Mr. Laryea said Nii Lante has not yet been charged and his lawyers are doing everything possible to ensure his release.
“As I speak with you, he has been arrested and sent to the Regional Police Command. Our lawyers are there trying to secure his release. We don’t know which offence he has committed.”
“All we know is that he was at the Modak hotel and was attacked by NPP hoodlums. We were having our collation at the Modak hotel. The information the party got was that…the NPP went around jubilating with their hoodlums. And when they got to the hotel, they started firing guns and attacking everyone there. The next minute what we could see was the MP being arrested. We are here at the Accra Regional command. We are waiting for him to be charged,” he said.
The MP had claimed that he was attacked by persons believed to be members of the governing New Patriotic Party at the Modak hotel at Korleworkor, a town in the area.
Citi News‘ Nii Ayikwei Okine who was following up on the MP’s claims reported that security officers numbering seven besieged the hotel demanding a halt in an interview he was conducting with the MP.
“The MP had wanted to move out of the hotel to the collation centre when the unidentified armed men took hold of him,” Ayikwei Okine reported.
“While the interview was going on, the security officers asked us to halt the interview”.
The MP who tried explaining the development to Citi News prior to his arrest said he suspected foul play.
“I saw a report that I have not been visible during the collation of the results. So I told my people that we have won, so we should go to the City Enginers collation centre. As soon as we got there, we saw some men, and they started shooting. As soon as we saw that, we went back into the hotel”, Nii Lante Vanderpuye said.
Meanwhile, the District Police Commander who was asked for comments disclosed that he could not speak to the matter.
