OFFICIAL: Akufo-Addo wins Dec 7 presidential polls

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been handed a second term in office.

After a keenly contested election, the Electoral Commission (EC) boss, Madam Jean Mensa has declared President Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) winner.

The 76-year-old man won with 6,730,413 of the total votes cast, representing 51.295 percent; while the flagbearer of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama placed second with 6, 214,889 votes representing 47.366 percent. That leaves a diference of 515,524 votes.

The total number of valid votes cast was 13,434, 574 representing a turnout of 79percent.

Speaking at a press conference to announce the results, Jean Mensa said, “by the power vested in me, it is my duty to declare Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the President-elect of Ghana”.

Earlier former President John Mahama had suspected foul play insisting they will not accept a flawed election and urged supporters to remain calm because victory will be theirs

President Akufo-Addo was elected President of Ghana after his third attempt in 2016.

He was retained after an incredibly tight election in the annals of the country’s political history.

One of the policies that made him popular was the free SHS policy and according to political pundits, it is one of the reasons that gave him reelection in the recently held election.
