Organic farming alone cannot feed us – Researcher defends GMOs

A researcher with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-SARI), Dr. Jerry Nboyine, has reignited the debate on embracing genetically modified organism (GMOs).

To him, food security means producing enough quality food to meet market demand.

But, he insists, without biotechnology in a rather growing global population, it would be difficult for countries including Ghana to feed itself.

“Organic farming alone cannot feed us,” he told some journalists in Kumasi on Friday.

He spoke at Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) in Africa during a one-day workshop for editors in the Ashanti Region.

The goal is to bring clarity on GM technology activities in Ghana and the status of work done on GM product (PBR Cowpea) within CSIR in Ghana.
