Organized Labour has declared a nationwide strike following the National Pensions Regulatory Authority’s (NPRA) approval for the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to proceed with its controversial plan to sell a 60% stake in four hotels to Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel.
The hotels affected by this decision include Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Hotel, Ridge Royal Hotel, and Elmina Beach Resort.
Despite widespread opposition and a massive demonstration against the planned sale, authorities remain resolute.
This has prompted Organized Labour to initiate the strike action to exert additional pressure on the government to halt the sale.
At a media briefing on Friday, July 12, 2024, Dr Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) “directed its members to lay down their tools effective Monday, July 15.”
“From Monday, July 15, 2024, all workers in Ghana must not go to work until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the process for the sale of its shares in the hotels.”
