Our Zoo’s And Public Safety

On Sunday, many Ghanaians woke up to the bizarre news of a middle-aged man being mauled to death by a lion at the Accra Zoo at Achimota.

This according to reports is because the victim allegedly scaled the fence into the enclosure of lions.

The incident has since triggered a police investigation into the matter and the subsequent closure of the facility to the public.

In 2019, a man was mauled to death by his own captive lions in a game reserve in South Africa.

The victim was named by local media as Leon van Biljon as he attempted to fix a broken fence in the lion enclosure.

In the Ghanaian case, the story sounds somewhat bizarre and one that triggers a lot of questions.

As Songwriter Johnny Nash puts it, there are so many questions than answers, and the more we find out, the less we know!

In fact, we at the GHANAIAN PUBLISHER believe that some security measures must be put in place to protect the public and even the wild animals who are almost extinct now.

Earlier, there were rumours that some of the lions moved out of the forest, a claim that has since been dispelled by the Forestry Commission.

We think that no matter the intention of the ‘intruder’, this victim should not have died if proper security structures were in place.

The paper opines that the Forestry Commission must employ innovative ways of surveillance and safety at zoos across the country.

The paper holds that technology must be applied to already existing safety measures at the Zoo to avert future occurrences.

We argue that motion detectors, must be put in place within a certain distance so the moment one go across it, it triggers an alarm.

As a country we may want to fix devices that could give a bit of a shock to intruders.

If this had been done, the deceased as he attempted to hold the perimeter fence would have been given a mild shock to back off.

In as much as this death is as needles as anything, the GHANAIAN PUBLISHER believes that there are several systems that we could put in place to ensure the safety of the zoo keepers, the safety of the animals and the safety of the public who come there to take a look at these wild animals.
