Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu has stated that Parliament is its own problem when it comes to discharging its mandate.
According to him, the day the legislator weans itself of being an appendage of the executive and where all wrongs of the executive are forced through, Ghana’s Parliament will be respected globally.
He said, “Yes, we weaken our mandate, we weaken our resolve and we weaken what we should be doing because of excessive partisanship and wanting the executive to succeed.”
At a Parliamentary leadership media engagement organized by the Public Affairs Department for the Parliamentary Press Corps, the Minority leader noted that if Ghana wants a stronger and more accountable parliament, then the parliamentarians must shed the partisanship and let the House function well.
“Where in the world can Parliament demand accountability on COVID expenditure and cannot have it? It is laughable if you say we are undertaking oversight.”
“That is why Ghana is rated very poorly when it comes to exercise of oversight,” he added.
