Parliament: Speaker inaugurates Ghana Chapter of the International Catholic Legislators Network

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has inaugurated the Ghana Chapter of the International Catholic Legislators Network (ICLN).

The inauguration marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s political landscape, emphasizing the commitment to principles that unite faith, ethics, and governance.

During his speech at the ceremony on Wednesday, August 2, the Speaker expressed both humility and determination, stating, “As elected representatives, we carry a responsibility that transcends political ideologies. With the establishment of the Ghana Chapter of the ICLN, we reaffirm our commitment to be stewards of moral and ethical leadership.”

He further emphasized the relevance of the network, saying, “The ICLN embodies a global commitment to the principles of love, compassion, justice, and integrity. It serves as a beacon for those of us entrusted with the solemn responsibility of governance.”

Mr. Alban Bagbin acknowledged the challenges faced by legislators in integrating faith and governance and asserted their mission is clear, but it is the path that is fraught with challenges.

He said, “It requires courage, wisdom, and an unyielding commitment to our faith and values.”

He stressed the need for action and unity, stating, “The Ghana Chapter of the ICLN will not be merely a forum for discussion, but a platform for action. It will support, educate, and empower its members to be true to their faith while serving their constituents.”

The event resonated with the words of Pope Francis, emphasizing humility and service, “Our responsibility is not to dictate but to lead. Our mission is not to impose our beliefs on others but to live them ourselves and inspire others to do the same.”

The inauguration of the Ghana Chapter comes at a time when faith faces challenges in the face of societal change and secularism.

However, the establishment of the ICLN serves as a testament to the timeless wisdom and strength of the Catholic faith, fostering a commitment to upholding the sanctity of beliefs and the integrity of actions in governance.

The event concluded with a resolute call to be leaders of action, to serve and guide with humility, and to plant seeds of values that will grow and provide shelter for generations to come.

The Speaker stressed, “The Ghana Chapter of the International Catholic Legislators Network is here to make a difference. It stands as a testament to the vital role that faith and ethical governance play in shaping a just and compassionate society.
