Parliament summons GRNMA President over prolonged nurses’ strike

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Health has formally invited the President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, to a high-level stakeholder meeting to address the ongoing nationwide strike by nurses and midwives.

According to a letter sighted by 3news, the meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., and will take place on the 6th Floor West, Job 600, Parliament House.

“I extend to you the compliments of the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health. On behalf of the Committee, I respectfully invite your leadership to a stakeholder meeting to deliberate on the ongoing strike action declared by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), and to discuss possible pathways towards its resolution,” the letter, signed by the Principal Assistant Clerk, Mrs. Eunice Korantemaa Abeka, stated.

The Committee emphasized the need for open dialogue and collaboration in resolving the impasse, stressing that the participation of GRNMA leadership is critical to advancing constructive engagement between the government and the striking health professionals.

“Your presence and input are vital to the Committee’s efforts to facilitate constructive dialogue among all relevant parties,” the letter added.

The strike by members of GRNMA, which began on June 2, is in protest against the government’s failure to implement a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that was approved in 2024 under the previous Akufo-Addo administration.

Despite assurances, the current government has cited severe financial constraints as a major obstacle to honouring the agreement, leaving nurses and midwives frustrated.

The GRNMA has maintained a firm stance, insisting that its members will not return to work until their demands are fully met. The ongoing strike has already begun to affect services at public health facilities across the country, prompting urgent calls for resolution.
