Parliament tightens security ahead of today’s proceedings

New security measures are set to take effect for today’s, Tuesday, October 22, 2024, proceedings at Parliament.

The House has announced a series of strict protocols to ensure the safety of MPs, staff, and the Speaker.

In a directive issued Monday, all MPs, staff, and press members are to undergo thorough screening before entering the Chamber.

The rules also specify that bodyguards will not be allowed inside, and vehicles are prohibited from parking around the Grand Arena.

“These precautions are not only for the protection of our Honourable Members but also to ensure the smooth functioning of parliamentary business,” the directive said.

Members of Parliament attending today’s proceedings are expected to be dropped off at designated zones within the precincts of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), with directions being provided by the Ghana Police Service.

MPs must also wear their identification tags for access, which will begin at 8:00 AM.

Incidentally, the public will not be permitted into the gallery until further notice.

The enhanced security measures come amid heightened concerns over safety, though officials have not elaborated on any specific threats.
