Parliament is set to launch the inaugural Democracy Cup on Thursday, June 13, 2024, as part of celebrations marking 30 years of uninterrupted parliamentary democracy in the country.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will inaugurate the sporting event at the Justice D.F. Annan Auditorium in Parliament House.
The Democracy Cup aims to unite sports enthusiasts nationwide, using football as a medium to foster civic engagement and promote wider participation in the legislative process.
The event will feature a match between two of Ghana’s premier league giants, Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, on Friday, July 5, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium. The winner of this match will earn the opportunity to play against the United States-based club, DC United, in Washington later in the year.
The launch event will be graced by Members of Parliament, media representatives, and officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), alongside other key stakeholders. A special exhibition match between Members of Parliament and former Black Stars players will precede the launch.
The Democracy Cup is part of a broader series of activities planned to commemorate the anniversary, including mock parliamentary sittings and debates, peace walks, and fun games.
