Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth, Sports, and Tourism, Kobena Mensah Wisdom Woyome, has highlighted the importance of government intervention to revitalize the Ghana Premier League.
With the 2024/25 season already in progress, the league is grappling with severe financial difficulties, as it lacks a headline sponsor and TV rights, following the Ghana Football Association’s decision to end its long-term contract with Startimes.
In an exclusive interview with Channel One Sports, Woyome, who is also the MP for South Tongu, stressed that a comprehensive strategy is essential to resolve the league’s financial challenges.
Government should be able to support in a way.
Government might not be able to do much fully, but it’s should be able to support.
i would also want to suggest that this should be opened up for a whole broader discussion to bring all stake holders together to discuss how do we support our league financially.
How do we bring cooperate Ghana on board?
What are the incentives for those who will come in and support? what do we have for them in return?
And again what do we dedicate in terms of funding to support?
what do we have for them in return?
All these are matters of policy and open discussions.
