PNC commends gov’t for 21% cocoa price increase

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has described as commendable government’s announcement in the price of cocoa.

The government through the Ministry of Agriculture increased the producer price of cocoa by 21 percent, translating to GH¢800 per bag, from the previous GH¢600.

This has stirred debate as the Minority took on government for the percentage increase. The caucus said the government could have done more due to the current economic hardship and the existential threat of smuggling.

But in a statement issued by its General Secretary, Janet Asana Nabla, the PNC said the new price is “commendable” given the Covid-19 repercussions and the Russia-Ukraine war.

“An economy that is negotiating with IMF to improve its debt management should be commended for stepping up to increase the producer prices of cocoa.

“The PNC is calling on all Ghanaians to kindly appreciate the economic difficulties we are in and to redirect our taste from the consumption of foreign goods to that of local ones to help in boosting the Ghanaian economy and to bear with the government in its policy implementation.”

The PNC urged all not to wish the government bad as successive governments may suffer if the current administration is not able to turn things around.
