Police arrest key suspect in Ahmed Suale murder case

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a key suspect believed to have played a pivotal role in the events leading to the tragic death of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

The arrest marks a major step forward in the long-standing investigation, offering hope for justice in a case that has gripped the nation and the international community.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale, a journalist with Tiger Eye Private Investigations, was shot and killed near his family home in Madina on January 16, 2019.

His murder came shortly after he collaborated with the BBC on an explosive investigative piece exposing corruption in African football, particularly within Ghana’s football administration. The case has remained unresolved for over four years, sparking widespread calls for accountability.

The suspect, identified as Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, was apprehended at a hair-plaiting salon in Amasaman-Adease.

According to police sources, Koranteng had fled Ghana shortly after the murder, relocating to the UK to evade arrest. His return to Ghana last week provided law enforcement with the opportunity to finally bring him into custody.

Koranteng, a former colleague of Suale at Tiger Eye Private Investigations, is accused of betraying the journalist by allegedly releasing his photographs to a prominent Ghanaian politician before his murder. These photographs, which circulated widely, are believed to have placed Suale in grave danger.

The arrest follows a breakthrough in the investigation, aided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States. The FBI assisted in extracting crucial evidence, including phone records detailing communications between Koranteng and Suale in the days leading up to the murder. Suale’s phones were sent to the U.S. as part of the collaborative effort to uncover the truth.

A source within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) revealed that Koranteng had been a frequent visitor to Suale’s Madina residence, further deepening suspicions about his involvement in the case.

While the arrest has been hailed as a significant milestone, it has also exposed internal tensions within the Ghana Police Service. Reports indicate that a senior police officer is attempting to interfere with the investigation, pushing for the suspect to be granted police enquiry bail rather than being arraigned before a court. This alleged interference has created an atmosphere of unease at the police headquarters, raising concerns about the integrity of the investigation.

The arrest of Daniel Owusu Koranteng has reignited hope for justice in a case that has become a symbol of the dangers faced by investigative journalists in Ghana and beyond. Ahmed Suale’s work with Tiger Eye PI, led by renowned journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, exposed widespread corruption and wrongdoing, earning him both acclaim and enemies.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to a thorough and transparent investigation. “We are determined to uncover the truth and ensure that justice is served for Ahmed Suale and his family,” a police spokesperson stated.
