The Ghana Police Service has expressed its preparedness to uphold peace and order during a forthcoming demonstration organized by the “Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey.”
The protest, scheduled from October 3rd to 5th, will see participants marching from Okponglo, Legon, to Independence Square in Accra.
“We have put in place sufficient security measures to ensure law and order during the demonstration and beyond,” affirmed Assistant Commissioner of Police, Grace Ansah-Akrofi.
In a statement dated October 2, 2024, the police revealed that they were formally informed of the Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey protest plans on September 26, 2024, and after discussions with the organizers, specific routes were outlined for the procession.
“The agreed routes begin from Okponglo, through key areas including the Electoral Commission Office, Parliament House, and Osu Cemetery, before concluding at the Accra Sports Stadium car park,” the statement highlighted.
During these engagements, the police reminded the organizers of their obligations under the Public Order Act, particularly regarding the protection of public and private property during the march.
“Any person taking part in the demonstration shall obey the directions of the police, ensuring the proper movement of others and maintaining order,” the police emphasized.
The statement also underlined the police’s responsibilities to preserve peace and the authority to take necessary actions, such as dispersing crowds or closing roads, should any disruption arise.
“We reserve the right to take such steps, including directing routes or closing roads, to prevent obstruction or restore peace,” the statement outlined.
The police reassured the public that all necessary security measures had been put in place to guarantee a peaceful protest.
“We wish to assure the public that all necessary measures have been taken to maintain peace and security throughout the protest,” ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi reiterated.
