Pragya accidents kill 104 in H1-2021; 220 impounded

The Ashanti regional police command has impounded 220 commercial rickshaws (pragya) for various road traffic offences.

The tricycles and their riders were arrested during an operation by the police to enforce road traffic regulations.

The Regional MTTD Commander, Superintendent Emmanuel Adu Boahen, told Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah that the enforcement was a result of several people dying accidents involving pragyas and aboboyas.

He said 104 people died from 697 such accidents in the region in the first half of 2021.

In all, 357 people have died from 2,135 road crashes in the region from January to July 2021.

Mr Boahen said most of the offenders arrested during the operation were below 18 years and riding the tricycles for commercial purposes.

He said others were also riding the tricycles on the shoulders of the road among other offences.

The Regional Manager of the DVLA, Mr Amos Abeka, also advised the riders to ensure that they have the requisite documents before hitting the road.

The General Secretary for Adedeta (Pragya) Drivers Association, Mohammed Haruna, said they are in support of the police action taken to ensure sanity on road.
