President John Mahama has revoked the appointments of Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), along with appointed Assembly Members, effective January 8, 2025.
The decision, communicated through a letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, is in accordance with the powers granted under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940).
In the interim, Coordinating Directors of the various MMDAs have been directed to assume responsibility as acting Chief Executives until substantive appointments are made.
“This action is in line with the provisions of the law, and the necessary arrangements are being made to appoint qualified individuals to fill these positions,” the letter stated.
The revocation affects all appointed Chief Executives and Assembly Members across the country, leaving a transitional leadership arrangement in place to ensure continuity in local governance.
The directive has been copied to key government officials, including the Vice President, the Chief of Staff, and other stakeholders.
The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development has been tasked to oversee the implementation of the directive and ensure compliance.
